What is L-theanine?
L-theanine is a non-protein amino acid found almost exclusively in tea leaves, particularly green tea. It is one of the reasons a cup of tea feels calmer than the equivalent caffeine from coffee. As a supplement it is taken for its ability to promote relaxation and focus at the same time, without making you drowsy.
How it works
L-theanine increases alpha brain wave activity, the same pattern associated with a relaxed but alert state, like the focus you feel during light meditation. It also influences calming neurotransmitters including GABA, serotonin, and dopamine. Crucially, it does this without sedating you, which is why it pairs so well with a stimulant like caffeine.
What the research says
- Combined with caffeine, it improves attention and accuracy on demanding tasks more than caffeine alone
- Reduces the jittery, anxious edge that caffeine alone can cause
- Promotes relaxation without drowsiness at doses of 100–200mg
- May modestly support sleep quality, likely through its calming effect rather than sedation
- Very well tolerated with a strong safety profile across studies
Effective dose
100–200mg is the typical effective dose. When stacking with caffeine for focus, a ratio of roughly 2:1 theanine to caffeine is popular, for example 200mg theanine with 100mg caffeine. This combination is one of the most reliable and well-tolerated nootropic stacks going, which is why it appears in so many pre-workouts and focus products.
What to check on the label
Look for L-theanine listed with a clear dose, ideally 100mg or more per serve. Many pre-workouts include it but underdose it, listing it as part of a proprietary blend where you cannot see the actual amount. If the label hides it in a blend, you have no way of knowing whether you are getting an effective dose.
Safety
L-theanine is considered very safe and is well tolerated even at doses well above the effective range. Side effects are rare. Because it promotes calm, some people prefer to avoid very high doses in situations where they need maximum alertness, though at normal doses paired with caffeine this is not an issue.
