Price range: $45–$80 / 1kg
WPC
Whey Protein Concentrate
70–80% protein by weight. More affordable than WPI. Small amount of fat and lactose. Good option for most goals.
Price range: $30–$55 / 1kg
Casein
Micellar Casein
Slow-digesting. Best taken before bed. Keeps amino acid levels elevated for 6–8 hours. Less popular but has legitimate use cases.
Price range: $50–$80 / 1kg
Plant
Plant-based protein
Pea, rice, hemp blends. Lower bioavailability than whey but improving significantly. Necessary for vegans; optional for others.
Price range: $40–$70 / 1kg
Key facts
1.6–2.2g
Protein per kg bodyweight
Daily target for muscle building. Most people get 0.8–1.2g from food alone.
25–30g
Per serve
Optimal single-serve amount for muscle protein synthesis. More doesn't mean better.
90%+
WPI protein content
What you're paying for. Check the label — some products pad with fillers.
$4–6
Per 100g (good value)
For WPI. Anything over $8/100g is overpriced unless it's a specialist product.
What to look for
Protein percentage per serve — divide protein grams by total serve size. 80%+ is good for WPC, 90%+ for WPI.
Complete amino acid profile — whey is a complete protein. If buying plant-based, look for pea + rice blends which together provide a complete profile.
Cost per 100g of protein — not cost per 100g of powder. This is the real comparison metric.
Amino spiking — some cheaper products inflate protein numbers with cheap amino acids like glycine or taurine. Check for third-party testing.
Excessive additives — creamers, thickeners, and fillers add weight to the bag without adding protein. Check total carbs and fat relative to protein.
