What is taurine?

Taurine is a conditionally essential amino acid — the body synthesises it but may not produce enough under conditions of high physical demand. Unlike most amino acids it is not incorporated into proteins. It is found in high concentrations in skeletal muscle, heart tissue, the retina, and the brain. Dietary sources include meat and seafood.

How it works

Taurine acts as an osmolyte — regulating fluid balance within cells. It modulates calcium handling in muscle tissue, supports antioxidant activity, and has been shown to reduce exercise-induced oxidative stress. In the brain it acts as an inhibitory neurotransmitter, contributing to the calming effect sometimes reported with taurine-containing energy drinks.

What the research says

  • 1g of taurine improved cycling time trial performance by 1.7% compared to placebo (Balshaw et al., 2013)
  • Reduced muscle damage markers and delayed fatigue in endurance exercise
  • Improved fat oxidation during moderate-intensity exercise at 1.66g per day (Rutherford et al., 2010)
  • Evidence for strength training performance is less consistent than for endurance

Effective dose

1–3g taken 60–90 minutes before exercise. Effects are modest but consistent in endurance contexts. Many pre-workouts contain taurine at 500mg–1g — at the lower end of the effective range. Energy drinks typically contain 1g per can.

What to check on the label

Taurine is inexpensive and commonly used as a filler ingredient in proprietary blends. Its presence on a label does not indicate an effective dose. Confirm the amount listed is at least 1g if performance benefit is the goal.

Safety

Well tolerated at recommended doses. Extensively consumed through energy drinks globally. No established adverse effects in healthy adults at doses up to 3g per day. The concerns about taurine in energy drinks relate to caffeine content, not taurine itself.
