What is tongkat ali?
Tongkat ali (Eurycoma longifolia) is a plant native to Southeast Asia, where its root has long been used traditionally for vitality and libido. It has become popular as a natural supplement for supporting testosterone, mood, and stress, particularly in men, though it is not a steroid or hormone itself.
How it works
Tongkat ali contains compounds called quassinoids, including one named eurycomanone, thought to influence hormone regulation. The leading theory is that it supports the body's own testosterone production and helps manage cortisol, the stress hormone, rather than directly adding hormones to the body.
What the research says
- Some studies show improvements in testosterone, particularly in men with low levels or high stress
- May support libido and overall wellbeing
- Some evidence for reducing stress and cortisol
- Results are more consistent in stressed or deficient individuals than in healthy young men
- Promising but the research base is still developing, so treat claims with measured optimism
Effective dose
200–400mg per day of a standardised extract is the typical range, usually taken in the morning. Look for extracts standardised to a percentage of eurycomanone. Benefits tend to build over a few weeks rather than appearing immediately.
What to check on the label
Standardisation is everything here. Look for a clearly stated extract ratio and eurycomanone percentage. Cheap, unstandardised root powder is unlikely to do much. This is an ingredient where paying for a reputable, tested product genuinely matters, as quality varies enormously.
Safety
Tongkat ali is generally well tolerated at recommended doses. Because it may influence hormones, anyone with a hormone-sensitive condition, on medication, or who is pregnant should avoid it or check with a doctor first. Stick to reputable brands to avoid contamination issues that have affected some cheap products.
