What is ZMA?
ZMA is a specific formula combining zinc, magnesium aspartate, and vitamin B6. It was originally developed and promoted for athletes, with claims around improved recovery, sleep quality, and testosterone. In reality it is a convenient way to top up two minerals that active people are sometimes low in.
How it works
Zinc and magnesium are both involved in hundreds of processes in the body, including hormone production, muscle function, and sleep. Hard training and heavy sweating can deplete them. If you are deficient, correcting that can improve sleep and recovery. The vitamin B6 is included to aid absorption.
What the research says
- Restoring low zinc and magnesium can support healthy testosterone, but only if you were deficient
- Does not raise testosterone in people who already have adequate levels
- Magnesium may genuinely improve sleep quality, which aids recovery
- Athletes and heavy sweaters are more likely to benefit due to higher losses
- The hype around testosterone boosting is overstated for most people
Effective dose
A standard ZMA dose is around 30mg of zinc, 450mg of magnesium, and a few milligrams of B6, taken before bed. Taking it at night fits the sleep and recovery angle. Avoid taking it with calcium or dairy, which can interfere with zinc and magnesium absorption.
What to check on the label
Check it actually contains meaningful doses of zinc and magnesium rather than token amounts. A plain magnesium supplement may be better value if sleep is your only goal. If you eat a varied diet with plenty of whole foods, you may already be getting enough of both minerals.
Safety
ZMA is safe at normal doses. Too much zinc over time can interfere with copper absorption, so do not megadose. Magnesium in high doses can cause digestive upset. Stick to the standard dose and do not stack it with other high-dose zinc or magnesium products.
